Web Quest

So far for our web quest we have completed our tasks, process, standards, and objective.  We are working hard to get things together and finalized before we submit.  We are also making our own rubric for our students to follow for when they are completing the WQ assignment.  Natalie and I are working great together to have a successful webquest!

April 8, 2011

This week Natalie and I are working on our hook for the WebQuest.  We decided to have our students start on the East Coast and make their way to California for the great Gold Rush!  Some things that we considered for our students to think about for their journey are:
1.  How will you save money for your journey?
2.  How will you break up the jobs between you and your partners?
3.  What route will you take to the West coast? land or water?
4.  How will you find food?
5.  Will you bring medication in case of sickness?

The students will also come up with their own traveling precautions for their journey.  We are also having the students create a poster to encourage people to come out to California for the Gold Rush as an art integration.  They can even come up with their own team names for inspiration!

Gold Rush

For the WebQuest Natalie and I will be focusing on the 4th grade standard of the California Gold Rush.
4.3.2: Compare how and why people traveled to California and the routes they traveled.
The websites that we are looking at right now are:http://www.huntington.org/Education/GoldRush/game/index.htm
http://pbskids.org/wayback/goldrush/journey.html
http://museumca.org/goldrush/fever01.html
http://www.kidport.com/reflib/usahistory/calgoldrush/calgoldrush.htm
http://www.surfnetkids.com/goldrush.htm
The students will focus on a specific route that was taken to California by the 49ers.  One of the assignments that the students will be expected to complete for the WebQuest is to write out a dialogue from a 49ers perspective.  Some things included in the perspective are hardships they encountered, decisions that had to be made, reason for coming to California, what tools they used, and what they learned during their experience.
I think this will be a great assignment for fourth grade students because they will be able to learn new perspectives from people long ago.  They will be able to understand harships that the 49ers had to encounter in order to reach their ultimate goal...to find gold!

Web Quest

My idea of a web quest is something that I design that is inquiry based for students to interact with.  The web quest must be user friendly and allow users to contribute their information.  I will be in a group for the web quest assignment with Natalie.  We will be focusing on the Gold Rush, which is a fourth grade standard.  Familiar resources would be teacher manuals, teacher websites, and possibly video's from child-friendly sources.

About Me

My name is Vanessa.  I am in my last semester of my Master's Degree and I am very excited to graduate in May.  I am focusing my final project on the benefits of parent involvement for K-2 students.  I am currently involved in a long term sub position for 12 weeks in a kindergarten classroom.  This is my second week!  I have a class of 25 students at a local elementary school.  This is my first long term position, so I am definitely learning a lot! I have two English Bulldogs named Vladimir and Luther.  I have a boyfriend whose name is Nicholas, we have been together for about eight years!  I enjoy weekend getaways and relaxing at home.  I would really like to improve my tennis skills, so hopefully I can find some time in my busy schedule to do that.
